“My name is William, I am 26 years old, and I am a sound designer.
I custom-make acoustic drums and snare drums using specialized tools and North American wood.
This project stems from my passion for the drum, for drumming. I've been playing since I was 10. This passion has always stayed with me. I had the opportunity to do all my college coursework in mechanical engineering related to drums. I discovered that it was possible for me to make drums and achieve a sound I was looking for, which I couldn't find in modern drums on the market. I realized I could have my own identity as a drummer.
After my studies, and gaining some experience in the sector, I told myself that I could have my own drum manufacturing business. I must say that I come from an entrepreneurial background; my parents were entrepreneurs. I was born into their business!
My company, Ebenor, has been around for five years now. I have created approximately 500 drum units since September 2014. I feel that I have had an impact in the world of drummers in Quebec, a world very rich in human and musical terms, of course. I can help drummers stand out.
So I embarked on a project that might seem a bit crazy, but to see that I'm achieving some success, which I'm proud of, and that I can make a living from it, I think that can inspire others.
Self-knowledge
“This project teaches me a lot about myself, it helps me to develop, to position myself in life, to know where I want to go. I need to find myself in all of this, to recharge, to take care of myself, and my project has allowed me to realize that.
It takes self-work to be an entrepreneur, to make your business shine and stand out. The company is me; it’s my values that I put forward, such as family, audacity, respect. There are people who have helped me delve into and identify these values. It’s not easy work; I had to do a lot of it at the beginning, and I sometimes have to stop to continue doing it. We are always learning about ourselves.
I surround myself with people who share this approach and with whom I want to do business. A strength of my project, I believe, has been to surround myself with the right people. They have allowed me to develop as a human being. It's largely the human approach in what I do, with my collaborators and clients, that stimulates me.
Pride
“I recently made a major investment by moving my workshop to a new place where I also live. I bought land with a lake. I have 20 acres of land where I can chop wood, run, walk in the woods, truly find myself, stop… just not think sometimes!
That's what I'm most proud of today: having my own workshop, my home even more, my land, my place where I can find myself. I had made it a goal a few years ago. Having achieved it, I am very proud.
Realizing my project here, in the Mégantic region, starting it in Saint-Romain and being in Saint-Sébastien now, is a strength. Personally, it's important because I can have nature nearby, where I can recharge. I felt I really needed to take care of myself, and this is where I can do it.
At 26, I'm on the right mountain to reach the summit... but for me, the summit is constantly changing, the ascent is infinite. But I know I'm on the right adventure, and I'm certain of that!”
Comments gathered in May 2019, as part of the series "my life at the summit", an invitation from the Mégantic region to live life to the fullest.
